Equine Assisted Services (EAS) is no new concept, as horses have long been utilized as healers of both the mind and body (follow link below). Engaging with a horse in any way can produce unexpected benefits, but partnering with a horse in training and competition produces a new level of trust and connection.
While there are many types of EAS programs offered to military veterans nationwide, the horsemanship program offered by Endurance Equine provides a unique opportunity to physically-abled veterans who desire an intense and structured training and competition schedule with an equine partner.
What should you expect from this program?
Participants will undergo an initial screening for suitability to the program before being admitted. This will consist of a brief interview to give your instructor an idea of your experience level with horses. You will be asked to provide at least one reference.
The instructor will then assign you to one of the program horses based on your initial assessment. The first sessions will include handling on the ground and arena work under saddle. Once the instructor decides you are ready, we will hit the trails and begin the real training!
The training criteria will be handed out to participants as a timeline of specific goals which ultimately culminate in competing in an endurance ride. Successfully finishing an endurance ride will mark the participants "graduation" from the program. The length of the program may vary depending on weather, when the participant enrolled, and what regional rides are scheduled for the respective calendar year. Expected duration is approximately 12 weeks.
